By 65 million years ago, the end of the Cretaceous period and the beginning of the Cenozoic, the continents were aleady beginning to take the recognizable form they have today. Water still covered the area that is now Central America, Antarctica and Australia had still not separated and India was still on a collision course with the the continent of Eurasia.

The dinosaurs had just been wiped out by a mass extinction and the age of the mammals was now beginning. Flowering plants also continued to diversify during this period.
