After Eskom the south african electricity producer, the second most important coal user in South Africa is Sasol - the only successful commercial oil-from-coal plant in the world. Sasol uses the Fischer-Tropsch indirect liquefaction method, which has the added benefit of being able to process high-ash content coal to convert coal into petrol and diesel fuels, and provides raw materials for the petro-chemical and fertiliser industries.
