Solar towers for electricity generation

The solar chimney is technology which has been proven capable of generating electrical energy from the sun. The solar chimney consists of a very tall chimney surrounded by a solar collector. The collector heats the air near the ground and funnels the air into the base of the chimney. A turbine in the base of the chimney generates electricity as the buoyant air rises in the chimney. The prototype Manzanares solar chimney was built in Spain (150km south of Madrid) in the 1980s; it operated for seven years with a peak output of 50kW.
